ESC Buzzing

Postby xnickx » 06 Dec 2011 18:48

Hi all

Haven't been here a while, seeing it's summer coming up thought I'd dig the old girl out!

Got a Orion brushless setup a while ago, but ever since it went in, every now and then when trying to go forward (and sometimes backwards) the motor/ESC just buzzes, and the car stays put.

Anywhere I should start looking at?

Specs on the package I got:
Motor Data for Touring
Resistance: 0.025Ohm
Current draw: 21.9A
Turns: 15T
KV Rating: 2770
Max Efficiency: 85.5% @ 32A(210W)
Max Continuous current: 25A
Max Current: 60A (efficiency 80% = 380W)

Length: 44mm
Diameter: 30mm
Weight: 140g
Sensorless
Aluminium alloy anodized front and back plate
Carbon fiber, anti-magnetic mid section

Controller Data
Input voltage: 6 cell NiCd/NiMh, 2 cell Lipo
Maximum continuous current: 40A (with cooling fan), 25A (without cooling fan)
Peak Current: 90A
Resistance: 0.003Ohm
Weight: (inc wires, case, plugs): 42g
Length: 34mm
Width: 20mm
Height: 6mm
Auto transmitter recognition and setup (no setup button needed)

Best way really is to bench test the sucker. Put a multi meter on the battery pack, then motor then esc. Record voltage drops on each one. Do a current test if you are able to, see if motor is getting stuck and causing high current draw etc. Post your results here if you wish and let us take a look. If you can chuck an old/other esc in it and see if the problem goes away, or even old/other motor then it will help point to the problem.

Have talked to Stephen from Speedi and he seems to think it's cause it's a sensorless brushless setup, quite common apparently.

Would love to try a backup motor and ESC but I sold all of my old ones when I got this setup.

Just got a new battery today (old one died) so shall check it all out soon and see how it goes.
